The WHO expects high mortality in Europe due to COVID-19 in winter

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) office in Europe, Hans Kluge, described the condition for declaring the end of the COVID-19 pandemic in the world. This applies to the world system and the elementary disregard for rules and misinformation.

Conditions for the end of the pandemic

“We have to learn to live with the virus. As soon as the global health care system is not overloaded due to hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19, i.e., it will be possible to provide the services previously provided, the pandemic may become endemic,” said Hans Kluge, Director of the WHO European Office, in an interview with the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.

According to him, the best way to fight an infectious disease is a combination of effective vaccines and drugs. “The data is still coming in, and we at the WHO are analyzing it in great detail. We are testing another 16 vaccines. The only way to get rid of this pandemic is for politicians, scientists and people to work together,” Kluge said.

The WHO expects high mortality in Europe in the coming months.

“According to a fairly reliable estimate, half a million deaths are expected by February 1 [in the WHO European Region, 53 countries], provided that trends in the spread of COVID-19 continue. The good news is that we know what to do. Why do we have problems again? Because vaccination has stopped in more than half of the countries in the region,” the expert said.

He announced plans to set up a working group on vaccination and added that the coronavirus was now being actively spread in schools.

“We will test the safety of vaccines for children as there is more and more evidence that schools are now also a driving force behind the epidemic,” Kluge said.
